Drama

I was spending days with oceanic black tips. Together with my local guide, we were leaving from Umkomaas every afternoon when all the other boats were already heading back home after two standard drives. I was not diving myself, but I was waiting for the golden hour and trying to catch a split with the sun and a shark on a black background.

Generally, there might be a 20-30 minute window each day for such a shot. One evening, instead of a sunny or a more common cloudy sky, there was a real storm coming. It was headed right towards my boat.  This photo was captured at a moment where the storm was around 2km away, and we really had to head back home. If a storm caught us it would have been very dangerous to navigate a river mouth entry with heavy rain and a rough sea.

The photo shows an oceanic blacktip shark photographed in black water with a stormy background. South Africa, Aliwal Shoal.
