ABOUT JACOB DEGEE

Jacob Degee is an award-winning underwater photographer and deep sea diver best known for his striking, carefully framed close-up portraits of sharks.

Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1979, Degee began diving at age 13 and has completed over 2,000 dives in 15 countries across the globe.

In 2004, Degee was on a diving trip in the Maldives when the massive Indian Ocean tsunami ravaged the island. The shock and devastation that followed left him incapable of diving for several years.

But in 2011, a trip to the Galapagos Islands drew him back into the water. His perception of marine life changed forever after witnessing a giant school of hammerhead sharks swim peacefully past him. Aware of how vulnerable these magnificent sea animals are, Degee felt compelled to document them and present them to the public in a way they’ve never shown before: up close. Extremely close.

Degee trained with acclaimed photographer Alex Mustard, and now brings his own signature, studio-like style to underwater shoots. He spends hundreds of hours in the water with the animals he photographs, gaining their trust. He strives to bring out the beauty in creatures that most people might not ordinarily consider beautiful. His unique approach has earned him international recognition; in 2020, he earned five prestigious photography awards, including Underwater Photographer of the Year and GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Humans love seeing humans in their best form.

So I want to show wild animals in their best form as well.

I want to show their personality, their faces, their muscles, their unique shapes, and their grace.
